How to Use VLC to Cast Videos From Your PC to Chromecast

There are a few different ways to cast videos from your PC to your Chromecast. One of the easiest methods is to use a program that you might already have - VLC media player.

It's really easy to cast movies to your Chromecast with VLC because all you have to do is open the video and then click a few buttons.

How to Use VLC With Your Chromecast

Download and install the newest version of VLC. Version 3 and newer support Chromecast functionality.
In VLC, navigate to the Playback > Renderer menu and choose your Chromecast from the list, like in the screenshot above.
Open the video you want to send to your Chromecast. You can do this through the Media > Open File... menu in VLC, or by double-clicking the video file if you have VLC set up as your default media player.

You can also open the video first and then connect to your Chromecast if you already have the video playing. If the video doesn't start on its own, press the start button to begin playing it.

If you want to return playback to your computer, go back to the Playback > Renderer menu and choose <Local>. To completely stop playing the video, both on your computer and the Chromecast, just use the stop button like you would to quit playback on your computer.
